Biography
Dr. Cowart is a native of Twin City GA. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Georgia Honors College. Following college, Dr. Cowart received his Medical Doctor degree from the Medical College of Georgia. During his junior year at MCG, he was inducted in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He completed his residency in Family Medicine at Anderson Regional Medical Center in South Carolina serving as Chief Resident. He has practiced full spectrum Family Medicine in rural Georgia for over 28 years. Prior to opening Bulloch Family Practice, Dr. Cowart served as Chief Medical Officer of Candler County Hospital for several years and currently serves as the Medical Director of The Hearts and Hands Clinic of Statesboro, GA. In 2020, he was awarded the Jack A. Raines MD Humanitarian Award from The Medical Association of Georgia. He was recognized as the Family Physician of the Year for 2023 by the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians. Dr. Cowart is a past President of the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians, past President of the Georgia Healthy Family Alliance, past Speaker of the Congress of Delegates of the Georgia Academy of Family Physicians and has served on the GAFP board for over 20 years. Dr. Cowart is a member of the GAFP, AAFP, MAG and AAPL. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He and his wife Elizabeth have 4 children, 2 granddaughters, and 1 grandson. He is an active member of Statesboro First United Methodist Church.
